Knoxville is served by two airports- McGhee Tyson Airport and Downtown Island Home Airport.  The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority manages and operates these two airports. 

McGhee Tyson Airport serves the eastern Tennessee. It offers several non-stop flights to and from all around the United States. It is located about 12 miles south of Knoxville Downtown. Airlines serving the McGhee Tyson Airport include United Express, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, American Eagle Airlines, US Airways, and Delta Air Airlines.

Knoxville is served by two major interstate highways- I-40 and I-75. Getting to Knoxville is easy by car through these interstate highways.  I-40 connects Knoxville to Asheville, Nashville to the west and Bristol to the east via Interstate-81. I-75 connects Knoxville to Lexington to the north and Chattanooga to the south. These two interstate highways converge near Dixie Lee Junction, west of Knoxville, and split at the western end of Knox County.

Getting to Knoxville by Boat

Knoxville is an international port, which is connected to the Gulf of Mexico and the nation’s inland waterways via navigable channels. The Tennessee runs through the city. Rent a boat and get to Knoxville while taking in the beautiful sights along the way.  Recreational watercrafts are available like yachts, fishing boats, jon boats, etc. that frequent the river.

Public Transportation in Knoxville

The public transportation system in Knoxville is managed by Knoxville Area Transit (KAT). The KAT offers trolley and bus services throughout the city and several areas of Knox County. 

KAT Bus: It offers several fixed route buses all around the city. All the buses are outfitted with flip down bicycle racks. KAT buses run every 1 hour. The buses operate from 5:30 am until 12:30 am from Monday to Friday; from 6:30am to 12:30 am on Saturdays, and from 11:00am until 7:00pm on Sundays. 

The fare for bus is $1.25 per ride with transfer fee of 20 cent for adults; the fare for Students, elders and the handicapped is 60 cents with a transfer fee of 10 cent; kids below the age of 5 are offered free ride.

KAT Trolley: The KAT also offers a trolley service between in the Downtown Knoxville. There are three trolley routes that serve the University of Tennessee and the Downtown Knoxville area- The Orange Line, the Blue Line and the Green Line. 

Operating hours-

Orange Line: Operates from 7:00am to 8:00pm (Monday to Thursday), 7:00am to 10:00pm on Fridays and 9:00am to 10:00pm on Saturdays. It runs every 15 minutes on all days.

Blue Line: Operates from 7:00am to 8:00pm (Monday to Thursday), from 7:00am until 10:00pm on Fridays and 9:00am until 10:00pm on Saturdays. It runs every 7 minutes on Monday to Friday and every 15 minutes on Saturdays.

Green Line: Operates from 7:00am until 8:00pm (Monday to Thursday), from 7:00am until 10:00pm on Fridays and 9:00am until 10:00pm on Saturdays

Getting Around Knoxville by Biking and Walking

Several attractions of the downtown Knoxville are within walking distance. The city has several miles of greenways and sidewalks all around the city that link to the historic sites, nature preserves and other tourist spots of the city. The city is navigable afoot.

You can even rent a bicycle and explore the city. There are plenty of greenways that allow the bicyclists to downtown Knoxville.  The greenways include Third Creek Greenway, Sequoyah Greenway, Cavet Station Greenway and Jean Teague Greenway.
